Our governance work is guided by Standards Australia policies and publications licensed to SG such as HB 254 -2005: Governance, Risk Management and Control Assurance and the “Components of Control Assurance” framework depicted in that guide.
Corporate Master Business Model Reviews
The Board is directly responsible for setting the strategic direction and approving the strategic and operational plans. Guiding strategic direction is the mission & vision. The latter and the former are encapsulated in the organisation’s master business model (depicted below) reflecting the underlying commercial rationale of the organisation.
SG work with Boards to articulate the master model conducting business model reviews and SWOT analyses. The approach has its roots in the scenario thinking arena and the work of Kees van der Heijden. Where there is agreement and certainty over the market opportunity and the corporate purpose, complexity is minimised making the task of the Chairperson & the Board easier.
Board Effectiveness
The Board is responsible for control assurance which is actioned through control elements including planning which itself is surrounded by four structural control categories namely the Board itself, the organisation, management and independent control assurance. Board responsibilities and accountabilities are embodied in a Board Charter & Board Procedures Manual. SG works with the Board to develop these key quality control tools. SG is also able to undertake Board effectiveness reviews cover issues such as recruitment and selection, ongoing professional development and running effective meetings.
Risk Management
SG assists Boards to identify their portfolio of risks. Enterprise of any nature embodies some or great risk. The later arises out of uncertainty and is the exposure of the business to the possibility of such things as financial loss or gain, physical damage injury or delay as a consequence of pursuing or not pursuing particular course(s) of action. SG works with a Board to establish an appropriate risk management policy and approach that is appropriate for the organisation and is directed at defining the commercial context, identifying,analysing,evaluating and treating risks, culminating in the building and maintenance of a corporate and operational risk register.
Business Continuity Management
In addition to a risk management policy is the capacity of the organisation to weather and endure periods of external and internal crises. SG work with Boards and senior management to focus on the organisation’s critical operational objectives – what the organisation must absolutely achieve in the face of ongoing future uncertainty, allowing for the continued availability of the necessary processes and resources required to achieve those critical objectives andbe sustainable.
Corporate Reporting and Financial Leadership
SG works with Boards to report effectively the critical success factors and key performance indicators of success. In addition to the classic financial performance metrics, SG encourages the use of Balanced Scorecard and Triple Bottom Line reporting that encourages deeper systemic lead indicator thinking behind lagging results. SG also works with senior management to establish reporting formats and including quarterly rolling forecasting and the use where appropriate of Monte Carlo based forecasting and risk simulation.

In addition to governance consulting work, SG can work with the Board or individual directors, owners and managers to deliver tailored professional development, designed to improve skill and knowledge on and around governance, leadership and management .
